Domains & hosting

Your domain, your site, and the settings behind them — in one place.

Your domain name, your website, and the DNS settings behind them — the records that point the internet at your site and your email. We run those ourselves, which means the records that decide whether your mail arrives are ours to change, not someone else's to get around to.

What you get

  • Renewals paid years ahead if you want, so a lapse stops being possible
  • DNS managed by the same people who manage your email
  • Certificates that don't expire quietly on a Friday
  • Someone to call when the website stops loading
  • A DNS change made while you're on the phone, not next week
  • Protection in front of the site rather than bolted on after something happens

What we look after

Domains, DNS, hosting and certificates are four things most businesses hold with four different suppliers — which is fine until they need to agree with each other.

Domains

  • Registration of new names
  • Transfers in from another provider
  • Renewals tracked, and payable years in advance
  • .nz and international extensions
  • Held in an account in your name

DNS & protection

  • DNS hosted and managed by us
  • Amazon Route 53 where it suits
  • The mail records that keep your email arriving
  • Cloudflare proxy and protection
  • Changes made when you ask

Hosting

  • Sites on our own VMware platform
  • Or hosted in AWS
  • Daily backups, kept for seven days
  • Mailboxes included
  • Dreamscape hosting where it suits

Certificates

  • SSL issued and installed
  • Renewed before expiry
  • Applied across subdomains

What sits behind it

Domains are registered through our Dreamscape Networks partnership. Cloudflare sits in front of what we host, we're a Red Sift partner for the email authentication side, and DNS runs on our own infrastructure and on Route 53.

How it works

  • Domain registration and renewal

We're a Dreamscape Networks partner, so registrations, transfers and renewals come through us — new names, moves from another provider, and the renewal dates tracked so a domain never lapses because an invoice went to somebody who left. Domains run a year at a time, and depending on the ending you can pay for up to ten years at once.

  • DNS on our own systems

The registrar holds the name; we run the DNS, on our own infrastructure and on Amazon Route 53. That distinction matters on the day you need a record changed — it is ours to do while you're on the phone, rather than a ticket with whoever holds the domain.

  • The records that decide whether mail arrives

SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up properly and kept that way, using Red Sift OnDMARC so we can see what is actually being sent as your domain before anything is enforced. Get these wrong and your invoices land in spam folders; get them very wrong and somebody else can send mail as you.

  • Cloudflare in front

Cloudflare sits in front of your site, so visitors reach them rather than your server directly. It hides your server, absorbs a sudden burst of traffic, and makes pages load faster for people further away.

  • Web hosting

Sites run on our own VMware environment or in AWS, with the DNS and mail records managed alongside them rather than by three different parties. Dreamscape hosting is available too where that suits better.

  • Certificates

SSL issued, installed and renewed before it expires, with monitoring across your domains so nobody meets a security warning on your site — least of all on a Friday afternoon.

  • Hosting as one arrangement

Rather than a hosting plan you then have to add things to, the pieces come together: the site, the mailboxes, Cloudflare in front, the mail records, and daily backups kept for seven days. Monthly or yearly, no commitment either way, and paying yearly costs less.

  • The domain stays yours

Registered in an account in your business's name, not held inside a supplier's account with your name on a spreadsheet. It costs nothing to do properly and it is close to impossible to fix in a hurry.

Common questions

Who owns the domain?
You do. We'll hold it in an account in your business's name — being locked out of your own domain by a former supplier is a genuinely nasty problem and it should never happen.
How long can we register a domain for?
Domains run a year at a time. Depending on the ending, you can pay for up to ten years in one go — and for the name your business actually trades under, that is usually worth doing. It takes the renewal off the list of things that can quietly go wrong while nobody is watching.
Can you move a domain someone else is holding?
Usually. It needs cooperation from whoever currently holds it, and occasionally that's the difficult part, but it's a well-worn path.
Do you build websites?
We host and support them, and through EzyNomNom we provide sites for hospitality venues. For anything bespoke we'll be upfront about whether we're the right people.
What does hosting cost?
It depends on the site and what needs to sit around it, so we quote rather than publish a table. What we will not do is give you a number that turns out to exclude the things that actually matter — the mailboxes, the protection in front of it, the snapshots. Tell us what you are running and we will price the whole arrangement. You can pay monthly or yearly, there is no commitment on the monthly option, and paying yearly costs less.
How quickly can a DNS record be changed?
Quickly, because we run the DNS ourselves rather than raising it with whoever holds the domain. The change is ours to make. After that it is only a question of how long the old record was cached for — not of anyone's queue.
What does Cloudflare actually do for us?
It sits in front of the site, so visitors reach Cloudflare rather than your server directly. That hides your server, absorbs bursts of traffic, and filters a lot of automated nuisance before it arrives. For most business sites it also makes pages load faster for people further away.
Our email keeps landing in spam. Is that a DNS thing?
Very often, yes. SPF, DKIM and DMARC are DNS records that tell the receiving mail server which systems are allowed to send as your domain. If they are missing or wrong — which is common after a mail migration — legitimate mail gets treated as suspicious. It is usually a quick thing to check and worth checking.
We've got the domain somewhere, the site somewhere else, and email somewhere else again.
That is the normal starting point, and it is exactly the arrangement that becomes painful the day two of them need to agree. We can take over as much of it as you want, in whatever order causes the least disruption — usually DNS first, since that is what everything else depends on.
